Start With the Garment Use, Not the Fabric Name

When your team is planning a sportswear line for retail, teamwear, uniforms or private-label sales, fabric choice should start from the garment use, movement level, skin contact, washing frequency and first performance target.

A training T-shirt, a yoga legging, a team jersey and a warm-up jacket may all be called sportswear, but they do not need the same fabric logic. Before recommending fabric, we first check how the garment will be worn, how much stretch it needs, how often it will be washed, and which performance risk matters most.

Choose the First Performance Priority

A sportswear launch may need quick dry, stretch, support, softness, opacity and sustainable content at the same time. We help your product or sourcing team decide which requirement should lead before structure, composition, GSM and finishing are selected.

Stay dry during sweat

For training tops, running shirts and teamwear. We usually start from polyester jersey, bird eye or mesh structures, then check moisture movement, drying speed and whether the fabric feels sticky after sweating.

Move without losing shape

For leggings, sports bras and compression pieces. High stretch is not enough. Recovery, support, heat setting and waistband matching must also be checked.

Stay covered during stretch

For yoga leggings, white colors and tight-fit garments. Flat fabric may look fine, but opacity should be checked under stretch. GSM, yarn count, knit density and construction all affect coverage.

Add structure without bulk

For warm-up jackets, athleisure sets and structured tops. Scuba, Ponte Roma and bonded fabrics can improve shape, but the fabric should not become too heavy or stiff for the target garment.

Build a sustainable performance line

For recycled activewear or brand compliance programs. Recycled yarn route, documentation, shade control and bulk repeatability should be confirmed early.

A Sportswear Line Is Rarely Built With One Fabric

Most sportswear projects need a fabric map, not a single fabric quotation. A hoodie may need French terry for the body and rib for cuffs and hem. A training top may need jersey for the main body and mesh for ventilation zones. A leggings program may need a high-recovery stretch fabric for the body and a stronger waistband fabric for hold.

Planning these fabrics together helps reduce sampling loops, color mismatch, shrinkage mismatch and bulk production risk.

We look at how each fabric will be used in your garment, such as the body, sleeves, lining, cuffs, or collar. Then we recommend the right face texture, backing, GSM, stretch, handfeel, MOQ, and testing plan so the fabrics work together in production.

Drying speed, anti-cling feel, print or dye method, and shade consistency between body and panels.

This keeps a training top breathable without making the whole garment too open, fragile or costly.

Nylon spandex or poly spandex for the body, with a stronger waistband fabric or adjusted construction.

Recovery, opacity under stretch, compression feel, shrinkage and waistband/body matching.

This helps avoid a common problem: the legging fabric feels soft, but the waist loses hold after wearing.

Recovery Risk

Possible causes include weak recovery, unsuitable spandex level, unstable heat setting or waistband and body fabric mismatch.

Possible causes include low GSM, loose construction, poor opacity under stretch or the wrong fabric direction for tight-fit garments.

Training tops feel sticky after sweating

Possible causes include poor moisture management, unsuitable yarn choice, dense structure or weak breathability.

Hoodies or joggers shrink, twist or pill after washing

Possible causes include unstable setting, poor shrinkage control, brushing level, yarn quality or rib and body fabric mismatch.

Balance Performance, Cost and Bulk Stability

Sportswear fabric should not be judged by one feature alone. A very soft fabric may lose support. A very light fabric may lose coverage. A very breathable structure may become less durable. A recycled option may need stricter batch and documentation control. Our role is to help your brand, trading company or private-label team choose the right priority, then adjust fabric structure, composition, GSM, finishing and testing route around it.

Softness vs. Support

Buttery soft can feel premium, but support still matters.

Buttery soft fabric can feel premium, but it may not provide enough hold for leggings, sports bras or training pieces. For low-impact yoga wear, softness can be the first priority. For compression or high-movement garments, recovery and support should be checked together with handfeel.

We balance first-touch appeal with fit retention, recovery and the support level expected from the garment.

Lightweight vs. Coverage

Cool and light should not become transparent.

Lightweight fabric improves comfort and drying speed, but tight-fit garments may become transparent under stretch. For leggings and light colors, we may need to adjust GSM, yarn count, knit density or use a double-knit direction to improve coverage.

We keep the fabric aligned with the garment's coverage claim, not only its target weight.

Breathability vs. Durability

Airflow should not make the garment fragile.

Mesh and bird eye structures improve airflow, but open structures can increase snagging or deformation risk. For teamwear and training apparel, breathability should be balanced with yarn strength, washing durability and fabric stability.

We look at repeated use, not only the first airflow impression.

Recycled vs. Consistency

Sustainable content needs production planning.

Recycled polyester or recycled nylon can support a sustainable sportswear program, but the yarn route, certificate support, shade control and repeat bulk production plan should be confirmed before sampling.
