What is Softshell Fabric?

Modern softshell fabric is the definitive solution for high-output outdoor and tactical apparel. Unlike traditional hardshells that can be noisy and restrictive, our precision-woven materials provide a unique balance of weather resistance and mobility.

It is designed to bridge the gap between a lightweight fleece and a waterproof jacket. By combining a wind-blocking outer layer with a breathable, moisture-wicking interior, our fabrics provide “active” protection—keeping your customers dry without overheating during high-intensity mountain pursuits.

Our Softshell Fabric Structure

Our 3 layer softshell fabric is precision-bonded to provide a cohesive barrier against the elements while maintaining a soft, flexible hand feel.

3-layer softshell fabric construction with woven face, membrane, and microfleece inner layer
Face Fabric Layer

Durable polyester or nylon woven/knit face with mechanical or spandex stretch (2-way/4-way). Choose from twill, dobby, ripstop, oxford, or melange textures for optimal abrasion resistance and aesthetic appeal.

Membrane Layer

Breathable waterproof membrane using TPU/PU monolithic (eco-friendly) or ePTFE microporous technology. Delivers windproof protection while allowing moisture vapor to escape, preventing internal condensation.

Backer Layer

Soft fleece lining (microfleece, grid fleece, brushed tricot, or interlock) provides insulation and next-to-skin comfort. Customizable weight and texture to match your target market and price point.

Custom Range

From fiber selection to final finishing, we control every step to deliver softshell fabrics that match your performance targets and market positioning.

FAQ

Is softshell fabric a type of bonded fabric?

Yes—softshell is typically a 2–3 layer laminate (face fabric + membrane + backing).

What “related” backing options can I choose?

For warmth: fleece-backed. For lighter styles: tricot/jersey/mesh backer.

What waterproof spec should I ask for?

Request Hydrostatic Head (mm), tested to ISO 811 or AATCC TM127.

How do you state breathability (MVTR)?

MVTR is usually g/m²/24h, commonly tested by ASTM E96—compare only if test conditions match.

Can softshell be made with recycled yarns?

Yes—GRS options are available; GRS verifies and tracks recycled materials through the supply chain.
