Microfleece is often treated as a completely different material from polar fleece, but the distinction is mainly about fabric construction. Microfleece is generally a lighter, thinner and shorter-pile option within the broader polar fleece category.
This difference matters when developing a garment. A jacket lining needs softness without excessive bulk, while a winter pullover needs more body and insulation. In these cases, the fabric name alone is not enough. Finished GSM, pile height, thickness and brushing structure provide a more reliable basis for selection.
As a general starting point, microfleece is suitable for lightweight layers, linings and activewear. Medium- or heavyweight polar fleece is more appropriate for pullovers, jackets, winter garments and applications requiring a fuller fleece appearance.

A dense short-pile fleece may feel compact and relatively flat. Another fabric at the same weight may use a more open base and higher pile, creating a thicker and softer result.

Regular polar fleece can also be breathable, but the result depends on its weight and density. A thick, tightly constructed fleece may feel too warm during high-intensity activity, even if the fiber itself dries quickly.
The choice should be based on expected use:
- Lightweight active layers need controlled insulation and lower bulk.
- Casual pullovers need a balance between warmth and comfort.
- Winter garments need more insulation than heat release.
- Jacket linings need softness without restricting movement.
- Wind-exposed garments may require fleece to be combined with a protective outer fabric.
Quick-dry or moisture-management performance should be confirmed separately. Polyester content alone does not guarantee that every fleece construction will perform the same way.
Choosing Fleece for Different Garments

The reverse surface should also be considered. A flatter reverse may move more easily against the outer fabric and simplify sewing.

Medium-weight polar fleece is generally more suitable for casual pullovers. It provides enough body to work as the main fabric and creates a more substantial appearance than microfleece.

Pile density and wind exposure should still be considered. Polar fleece can provide warmth, but it is not automatically windproof. For exposed outdoor use, it may need to be combined with an outer shell or developed as part of a bonded construction.

Microfleece and other low-pile fleece constructions are frequently used as backing layers for bonded fabrics.
A controlled pile height helps maintain consistent bonding and avoids creating excessive total thickness. The fleece should also be evaluated for adhesion, surface stability and the required hand feel after lamination.
Accessories and Lightweight Components
Glove linings, scarves, neck warmers, pocket linings and hat linings often benefit from microfleece because it is soft, flexible and easy to fold.
Regular polar fleece may be selected when the accessory requires greater warmth or a more visible fleece texture.

The final specification should describe the fabric rather than only naming it “microfleece” or “polar fleece.”
The most important details are:
Finished GSM
Confirm the weight after dyeing, brushing and finishing. Processing can change the final result compared with the greige fabric.
Usable Width
Use the effective cutting width when calculating consumption and marker efficiency.
Pile Height
A short pile creates a finer, more compact surface. A higher pile creates more volume and a warmer visual appearance.
Brushing Structure
Specify whether one or both sides should be brushed and whether the reverse should remain relatively flat.
Thickness
Thickness is particularly important for linings, fitted garments, bonded materials and multi-layer constructions.
Anti-Pilling Performance
Confirm which surface requires anti-pilling treatment and how the garment is expected to be used.
Hand Feel
Descriptions such as soft, compact, fluffy, dense or smooth should be supported by an approved reference sample whenever possible.
