Custom Finishing Options for Jersey Fabric

The same jersey fabric can feel and perform very differently after finishing.

A cotton jersey may become softer, smoother and more dimensionally stable, while a polyester-spandex jersey may require better moisture management and stretch recovery.

The right finish should therefore be selected according to the fiber composition, knitted structure, garment application and required final performance.

Start With the Base Fabric

Finishing cannot solve every problem in the original fabric.

Before selecting a finishing process, confirm the fiber composition, spandex content, fabric construction, target GSM, usable width and final garment application.

Cotton and CVC jersey usually require more attention to shrinkage and surface appearance. Polyester-spandex jersey depends more on heat setting, stretch recovery and moisture management.

The final specification should be based on the finished fabric rather than the greige fabric condition.

Compaction for Cotton Jersey

Compaction is commonly used for cotton, CVC, viscose and modal jersey.

It helps reduce wash shrinkage and improves dimensional stability before cutting and sewing. It may also change the final GSM and usable width because the knitted structure becomes more compact.

Compaction is especially important when consistent garment measurements are required.

Heat Setting for Stretch Jersey

Heat setting is essential for many polyester-spandex and nylon-spandex jersey fabrics.

It stabilizes the fabric width, surface and elastic structure. The process can also influence stretch percentage, recovery and hand feel.

Incorrect settings may leave the fabric unstable or reduce elastic performance. The finished sample should therefore be checked for width, stretch, recovery, surface flatness and edge curling.

Two fabrics with the same composition may still perform differently because of their knitting density and heat-setting conditions.

Bio-Polishing for a Cleaner Surface

Bio-polishing is mainly used for cotton, CVC, modal and viscose jersey.

It removes loose surface fibers and creates a cleaner, smoother appearance. This can improve solid-color presentation and print definition.

Excessive treatment may reduce fabric weight or strength, so the final fabric should be approved after the process is completed.

Bio-polishing is often combined with softening and compaction for premium cotton jersey.

Softening Finishes

Softening is one of the most common jersey finishing options, but the term “soft finish” is too general for bulk production.

The required hand feel may be dry, smooth, silky, buttery or full. The result depends on both the softener and the base fabric.

Silicone softening can improve smoothness and surface slip, but excessive use may reduce moisture absorption, affect printing or make the fabric too slippery during sewing.

A reference swatch is more reliable than a description such as “very soft” or “premium hand feel.”

Peaching and Light Brushing

Peaching creates a fine, soft surface and is often used for autumn and winter jersey.

It can make the fabric feel warmer without creating a heavy fleece effect. However, it may also affect color depth, stretch, pilling and surface uniformity.

The intensity of peaching should be controlled carefully. A heavier surface is not always better, especially when pilling resistance and clean appearance are important.

Moisture-Wicking Finishes

Moisture-wicking finishing is commonly used for polyester and polyester-spandex sports jersey.

Its purpose is to help moisture spread across the fabric surface and evaporate more efficiently.

This performance should not be judged only by the term “quick dry.” Moisture absorption, spreading and drying are related but different properties.

The finish should also be checked after washing because some treatments lose effectiveness over time.

Heavy silicone softening, water repellency and coatings may reduce moisture-wicking performance, so these processes should be developed together.

Antimicrobial and Odor-Control Finishes

Antimicrobial or odor-control finishing may be used for sportswear, uniforms and close-to-skin garments.

Before ordering, confirm the intended claim, wash durability, destination market and testing requirement.

Broad claims such as “permanent antibacterial” should be avoided unless they are supported by appropriate test results.

For many sportswear programs, odor control is a more practical requirement than a general antibacterial claim.

Water-Repellent Finishing

Water-repellent finishing allows light water droplets to bead on the fabric surface.

It may be suitable for certain outdoor or cycling applications, but it does not make ordinary jersey fabric waterproof.

The treatment may reduce moisture absorption, softness and wicking performance. It should therefore be used only when surface water resistance is genuinely required.

When the fabric needs both outer-surface repellency and inner-surface moisture management, the two sides may require different finishing strategies.

UV Protection Finishing

UV protection may be required for outdoor sportswear and summer garments.

The final UPF result depends on the fiber, fabric density, GSM, color and stretch, not only on the chemical finish.

A lightweight jersey may provide lower protection when stretched. The finished fabric should therefore be tested under conditions close to actual garment use.

Finishing Combinations That Need Care

Not all finishing treatments work well together.

Heavy softening may reduce moisture absorption. Water repellency may weaken wicking performance. Excessive bio-polishing may reduce fabric strength, while heavy peaching may increase pilling.

Adding more finishing processes does not automatically create a better fabric. A simpler finishing package is often easier to control and more stable in bulk production.

What to Confirm Before Bulk Production

The order specification should cover the finished fabric condition.

Confirm the finished GSM, usable width, hand feel, shrinkage, spirality, stretch, recovery, surface appearance and required functional performance.

It is also important to confirm whether the finish is compatible with printing, garment washing and the intended care conditions.

The approved sample should represent the final bulk fabric after all finishing processes have been completed.
